The Hobbit: There & Back Again is a competitive adventure game where players draft dice to make pathways, collect resources, and perform actions that help them to reach their chapter goal. All players open their adventure books to the same chapter of the game and play in turn-order starting with the shortest player. Each chapter boasts unique goals and ways to utilize the resources in the game, but a round is typically started by rolling the pool of dice and selecting one, then the next player selects, and so on until there are no other dice. The player whose turn it would be next then rolls and the rounds continue.
Follow Bilbo and the Company of Dwarves from Bag End to the Lonely Mountain in a story-driven dice adventure designed by Reiner Knizia. Each player records their own journey through eight chapters inspired by key events from The Hobbit, including encounters with trolls, goblins, wargs, giant spiders and the dragon Smaug.
Players open their individual adventure guides to the same chapter, then draft dice from a shared pool. Each selected result can be used to draw pathways, collect bread and swords, overcome obstacles or complete actions required by the current chapter. Once the available dice have been claimed, the next player rolls a new pool and the journey continues.
Every chapter introduces its own map, objectives and resource decisions. Players use dry-erase markers to record their routes and progress, competing to complete the most rewarding version of Bilbo’s adventure. A dedicated solo mode and adjustable difficulty rules are also included.
